An intriguing riddle within the Milky Way has found a surprising resolution. Following decades of observation, scientists have confirmed that a mysterious formation is situated and originates differently than previously surmised.

After nearly 40 years of research, astronomers have ascertained the true nature of an enigmatic structure once believed to be linked to the Milky Way’s core. New observations indicate the object is located much nearer to Earth than initially thought, and its genesis is not tied to the activity of a supermassive black hole.

This development was reported by the publication Science Alert.

The entity, identified as the Galactic Center Lobe (GCL), has persisted as one of astronomy’s most profound enigmas for decades. Its appearance resembled a colossal “lobe” seemingly ascending from the galactic center. Over years of study, various hypotheses regarding its origin were proposed, ranging from the aftermath of supernova explosions to the remnants of a powerful eruption from the Milky Way’s nucleus millions of years ago.

However, a recent investigation has debunked these assumptions. A team led by astrophysicist Cathalyn Kreckel from Heidelberg University has determined that the peculiar structure is not situated at the Milky Way’s center. In reality, it resides approximately 6,520 light-years from Earth, whereas the galactic center is about 26,000 light-years away. Consequently, the object’s actual dimensions are considerably smaller than previously estimated.

For their study, the team utilized data from the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper project, which generates detailed maps of gas within the Milky Way. Observations of ionized sulfur radiation proved particularly crucial. Its longer wavelengths penetrate cosmic dust more effectively, enabling scientists to discern the lower portion of the structure, which had previously been obscured against the galactic plane.

This breakthrough revealed that the object is not an open “lobe” but rather a closed loop or a gas bubble. This finding has even prompted researchers to suggest renaming it the “very tangled loop.”

To pinpoint the object’s distance, the scientists compared the degree of light attenuation by cosmic dust with three-dimensional dust distribution maps of the Milky Way. This confirmed that the structure is substantially closer to our Solar System than prior research had indicated.

According to the study’s authors, the gas bubble is predominantly composed of luminous hydrogen, ionized by intense ultraviolet radiation. While the source of this radiation remains unidentified, researchers hypothesize that the structure was formed by a preceding generation of massive stars. Their supernova explosions may have created a cavity in the interstellar medium, with a subsequent generation of stars causing the gas to emit light.

Scientists estimate the diameter of this gas bubble to be around 115 light-years. Its formation mechanism bears resemblance to the well-known Barnard’s Loop, although it is smaller in scale.

Previously, it was reported that scientists discovered a mysterious “super-Earth” with ideal conditions, potentially revolutionizing our understanding of the universe.
